TICCIH's goals are to promote international cooperation of individuals and institutions in preserving, conserving, investigating, documenting, researching, interpreting and advancing education of the industrial heritage in the world.
TICCIH was formally established in 1987. It is organised through national associations and through international thematic sections of members with shared interests.
TICCIH represents industrial heritage at an international level and provides expert advice to ICOMOS, according to an agreement signed between TICCIH and ICOMOS in 2014, to help assess the importance of sites which are considered for the UNESCO World Heritage List.
SIM is the National Committee of TICCIH in Sweden. Every member of SIM is also a member of TICCIH. TICCIH organises an international congress every three years and various intermediate conferences. The National Representative of Sweden participates in the international congresses and is the sole voting representative in elections for TICCIH officers. SIM elects a National Representative of Sweden.
